“Armenia and Artsakh: what’s next and what to do” – meet with Tatul Hakobyan on the East Coast/West Coast, 7-19 March, 2023

Armenian reporter and coordinator of the ANI Center for Armenian Studies Tatul Hakobyan will have a series of meetings and discussions with American Armenian communities, unions and organizations on the East Coast from March 7 to 14 and the West Coast from March 15 to 19, 2023.

The core of the meeting-discussions will be the situation in Armenia/Artsakh, particularly after the two-day war in September 2022, when Azerbaijan occupied new territories in the sovereign territory of Armenia, in the regions of Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor and Syunik, the presence of EU monitors along the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border, the closure of the Lachin corridor by the Azerbaijani authorities.

During his meetings, Hakobyan will also present ANI Center’s new report – “Syunik, the Spine of Armenia under Threat” which is available in Armenian (Read – https://www.aniarc.am/2023/02/12/syunik-report-ani-2022/). This report was prepared by the financial support of The National Association for Armenian Studies and Research, NAASR and The Knights of Vartan Fund for Armenian Studies.

Hakobyan will also present the Second Revised Edition of 270 page book written and compiled by him and Paul Shahinian The Journeys of Heroes, published by ANI Armenian Research Center. It presents translations of the memoirs of Vagharshag Shahinian, a volunteer fighter from Van, and Yeghishe Catchouny, one of the primary personal aides of General Antranik Ozanian. Both men served in the Caucasus front of WWI during the creation of the First Republic of Armenia in 1918.

The volume will be available for purchase during his trip.

During the meeting-discussions, Tatul Hakobyan will address the situation on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, the new conditions created in Syunik and Artsakh after the 44-day war, the blockade of Artsakh.

At the end of the meetings, the attendees will have the opportunity to purchase the publications of Hakobyan and ANI Center.

Tatul Hakobyan graduated from the Department of Journalism in Yerevan State University, and Georgian Institute of Public Affairs in Tbilisi. He has formerly worked as a correspondent for the newspapers Ankakhutyun (1991-1995) Yerkir (1998-2000), Azg (2000-2005), HETQ (2005-2006)Aztag (2005-2016), The Armenian Reporter (2008-2009) and as a political observer on regional issues of Radiolur news program of Public Radio of Armenia (2004-2008), Civilitas Foundation/CivilNet online TV (2009-2021) and a columnist at Aliq Media (2021-2023).

Since 2014 he has been a coordinator of the ANI Armenian Research Center (https://www.aniarc.am/).

In 2005 he received Yerevan Press Club’s Annual Award for the coverage of regional issues in Azg daily. In 2009, Yerevan Press Club  awarded him for his first book “Karabakh Diary; Green and Black”.

Hakobyan is a recipient (2014) of Haigashen Ouzounian Literary Award for his second book “Armenians and Turks”.

He is the 2016 winner of “The Time for Freedom of Press” – for consistent and comprehensive coverage of Karabagh conflict.

On February 20, 2019, Hakobyan received Media Excellence Award (2018 Universal Rigthts Award) in recognition of outstanding commitment to producing thoughtful and independent reports and promoting freedom of speech and expression.
